Can I stay in school, and still be able to bring my partner to Sweden?
Applying as a Student
We were both working abroad when we met, but as the pandemic started, we were both separated and brought back to our separate countries. Morgan back to Denver Colorado, and Will back to Gothenburg Sweden. Earlier that year Will had applied for a degree in physical therapy, and considering we were still separated he decided to start the course. In May the following year, we sent in our application for residency for Morgan. While Will was still in school as a full time student, Morgan was granted a 2 year TUT. In this article we want to share our experience, an important point to our process and share the notion that you can be a student and be successful in your application.
The main issue of being a student of course is the maintenance requirement. There are multiple ways you can show an income, however generally its one of these two :
Salary from Work - while being in school you manage to work enough hours on evenings/weekends to make the set amount.
Apply with saved funds - using saved up funds in savings, stocks, mutual-funds or other taxable assets.
.
The second part of the maintenance requirement is the part regarding housing. Most of the students around Sweden live in student accommodation, where the general rule to live in these apartments is that you have to be a student. Some differ from others on what the exact rule is with how many credits you need each year or classes you need to pass etc. We recommend that you along with your application send an overview of your previously passed classes, future classes that you are planning to attend and a letter signed by the landlord/agency where it states how your apartment:
Lives up to the requirement by being its own apartment (no dorm or corridor allowed) and has its own kitchen (no cooking cabinet, needs to be a kitchenette or a kitchen)
That your partner will be allowed to move into the apartment if your application is granted
That you will be able to stay in the apartment as long as you continue with your studies (add your full program details, example; Degree, School, Graduation dates)
One of the main questions we receive is if you can use your CSN as part of our maintenance requirement. You cannot use it as an income, however you can use it if you are applying with saved funds.
We do want to touch on the subject that you are supposed to be able to mix the two forms, lets say you have 75% of the saved funds that you need, you should be able to be granted if you also have a job on the side that covers the remaining 25%. However, more than once we have we seen people being rejected when doing this, and then having to go to court where the majority then have won the case. However, in our experience its an unreliable way of moving forward with your application, as you don't want to get stuck in waiting time for court. So if you can, we recommend that you stick to one or the other.
As you can tell there are a couple of more loops to jump through as a student, however hopefully with this article we have answered some of the questions you've had and made you feel empowered in your journey to rejoin your partner in Sweden. If you want to talk more about it, share your case or just go over your application, send us a message!
